BALTIMORE -- The United States women's lacrosse team will play an exhibition game against defending NCAA Division I champion Northwestern on Sunday, Jan. 29 in the first game of a doubleheader at Disney's Wide World of Sports® Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Admission for the day is $6.
The second game will feature a match-up of two schools that compete in the US Lacrosse Women's Division Intercollegiate Associates structure, the University of Central Florida against the University of South Florida at 2 p.m.
The U.S. team captured the silver medal at the 2005 International Federation of Women's Lacrosse Associations World Cup this past summer in Annapolis, Md. Three players that earned All-World recognition at the event -- midfielder Quinn Carney, defender Joanne Connelly and goalie Jess Wilk will be participating in the exhibition. Also playing for the U.S. will be the last two recipients of the Tewaaraton Trophy (given to the nation's outstanding collegiate player) -- Virginia's Amy Appelt (2004 winner) and Duke's Katie Chrest (2005 winner).
Northwestern stunned the collegiate lacrosse community last year by winning the national championship in just its fourth year since reinstating its varsity program. The Wildcats are coached by Kelly Amonte-Hiller (pictured), an All-World selection as a player for the U.S. this past summer. Northwestern also features one of the nation's premier collegiate players in Kristen Kjellman, a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy last year.
The U.S.-Northwestern game will begin at 10 a.m. and will feature three 30-minute periods. Following the game, both teams will be available for autographs.
