DENVER - State rivals Colorado and Colorado State each posted victories in the quarterfinal round of the US Lacrosse Women's Division Intercollegiate Associates National Championship at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Thursday morning. The rivals will meet in the semifinals on Friday.
The other semifinal match-up will also pit two familiar opponents. Unbeaten UCSB meets seven-time defending WDIA champion Cal Poly. UCSB beat Cal Poly 12-11 in overtime in the championship game of the Western Women's Lacrosse League championship two weeks ago.
The championship game is set for Saturday, May 10 at noon at Invesco Field at Mile High. The game will be broadcast nationwide on a tape-delayed basis by CBS College Sports.
CSU, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, led Pittsburgh just 3-2 at the half, but pulled away in the second half behind a four-goal day from Kristen Kasney to defeat the Panthers 12-3. CSU All-American goalie Brooke Lewis made 11 saves while allowing just three goals. Pittsburgh was led by Hillary Engel with a goal and two assists.
Colorado, the No. 3 seed, closed the first half with a five-goal run and went on to beat Santa Clara 13-9. The Buffaloes got seven goals from Jody Weisenhorn, three of them coming in the five-goal run at the end of the first half. Amber Lister added three goals and two assists for CU. Santa Clara goalie Renee Eligio made 18 saves to keep the Broncos in the game and Claire O'Leary had five goals.
Top-seeded UCSB drained 19 goals, including five from freshman Ashley Antoon-Algieri to top Lindenwood 19-13. The Gauchos led 17-7 before Lindenwood scored six straight in the second half to close the gap. Seven other Gauchos had two goals each. Lindenwood was led by Lacey Vatland with four goals and two assists and Kandee Schroeder also had four goals.
Fifth-seeded Cal Poly avenged a regular season loss to Michigan, beating the fourth-seeded Wolverines 11-5 for the first upset of the tournament. Cal Poly scored four goals in a span of less than three minutes early in the first half to pull in front 6-1 and cruised to the victory. Amber Curry had three goals and Sarina Madnick had two goals and three assists for the Mustangs. Amy Johnson led Michigan with two goals and an assist.
In consolation round play, Mary Katherine O'Rourke scored six goals to lead Army past Texas A&M 16-13. The Black Knights also got four goals each from Tara Roberts and Elizabeth Small. Texas A&M was led by Melissa Cooper with six goals.
Virginia Tech scored three times in the opening three minutes of the second half to pull away from a 7-6 halftime lead, and went on to beat Minnesota 13-11. Brooke Zeitler led the Hokies with three goals while Kimberly Sauer led Minnesota with four goals.
No. 16 seed Boston College surprised No. 9 seed UCLA with a 13-10 victory. The game was tied 8-8 in the second half before BC scored three straight to go up 11-8 with just over 10 minutes to play and the Eagles held on for the victory. Shannon Jurgens had four goals to lead BC, and had a goal and an assist during the key second half run. Sarah Strock led UCLA with three goals.
Georgia jumped out to a 7-2 halftime lead and went on to a 14-9 victory over Michigan State. Elaine Kelch led the Bulldogs with three goals and Angela Alfano added a pair. Michigan State was led by Michelle Signorello with three goals and an assist.
